 INTRODUCTION TO LEICESTER

Leicester's Clock Tower

Perched astride the river Soar, Leicester is home to nearly 300,000 residents, making it one of the UK's larger cities.

Surrounded by rolling countryside, the city also lies adjacent to the English National Forest - a perfect spot for walkers.

The city itself is renowned as one of the country's most culturally diverse conurbations, with large communities from India, Pakistan and the Caribbean especially prominent. Due to this fact Leicester can offer an immensely varied range of cuisine and shopping from around the world for visitors to enjoy.

Leicester Scenes

Leicester town centre is dominated by impressive Victorian architecture, although much new development has sprung up in recent years and more projects are planned, including a state-of-the-art performing arts centre. Shoppers are also well provided for in the city, with several large retail areas and outdoor markets.

 PLACES TO VISIT NEAR LEICESTER

Leicester's Clock Tower

The surrounding Leicestershire countryside is very beautiful. The National Forest stretches from the outskirts of Leicester to Burton-on-Trent, encompassing 200 square miles in all. The National Forest's visitor centre, Conkers, is about 15 miles North West of Leicester by the village of Moira.

Charnwood Forest is a picturesque, rocky upland tract in north-western Leicestershire with extensive woodland, noted for its beautiful displays of bluebells in the Springtime.

There are several large cities just a short drive away from Leicester - Coventry, Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham and Peterborough - and many towns. Coventry, to the South East, is the nearest city, while Britain's second most populous city Birmingham is under an hour's drive and has a great many attractions.
