Belgrave - The Golden Mile

Situated on the northern side of Leicester, the district of Belgrave is known for its vibrant Asian community. Due to this the area is home to a proliferation of Asian jewellers selling primarily gold, and many people mistakenly believe this to be the source of the high street's nickname - The Golden Mile. In fact, The Golden Mile - in reality, Belgrave Road - got its name from the unusually high number of traffic lights that line the street.

Owing to the community that populates the area, it is no surprise that many fine traditional Asian restaurants are on offer the whole length of The Golden Mile, pulling in a large number of locals and visitors alike. One event guaranteed to draw the crowds is the annual Diwali celebration, and the Christmas lights on display over the festive period are nationally famous.
