"Lovely memories of South Lodge as Visually Impaired School ."

A review of South Lodge by Sandra Collings - Monday 15th of October 2007

I attended South Lodge when it was a school for the Visually Impaired. Many of my friends also went to this lovely school which opened in 1955 and closed in 1987. Most of us spent our childhood there and have lovely memories of this lovely house set in beautiful grounds.

Originally this was a house built in the early 1880's and was then called 'The Lodge' and was the home of Thomas and Selina Gunn who owner a fancy hosiery factory in Crafton Street Leicester.

This lovely building has now been sold from Leicester City Council to a private developer who is converting it into apartments with 24 hour care for the elderly.

I visited South Lodge in February of this year before it was sold and although it was in a poor state and the grounds were very overgrown there was potential for it to look to its former glory as I always remembered. The beautiful trees still look as elegant as they always did and more so with age.

I thought this may be of interest to any old scholars of South Lodge when it was the school.
